"Portrait of Jacqueline Roque with her hands crossed", 1954. Jacqueline was Picasso's muse and second wife. They met in 1953 at the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of south-east France. She was 26 years old and he was 72. Wed in 1961 their marriage lasted 12 years until Picasso's death in 1973. During this time he created over 400 portraits of her. Jacqueline shot herself in 1986 in her Mougins home; she was 59 years old.

"Nous autres musiciens", 1921. Philadelphia Museum of Art. 
"Weeping Woman', 1937. Tate. The painting is based on an image of a woman holding her dead child. It is taken from Picasso's anti-war mural, "Guernica". He created both works during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) in response to the bombing of the Basque town. 
"Femme nue II" (Blue Nude), circa 1902, believed to have been inspired by a recent bereavement. 
"Les Demoiselles d'Avignon", 1907. The most famous example of cubism? The website pablopicasso.org asserts that in this picture Picasso abandoned all known forms of traditional art. It also shows the influence of African art. 
"Self Portrait", 1901. Painted during his second stay in Paris in the winter of 1901, it was the end of a series and marked the beginning of the Blue Period. He was only twenty years old at the time. |
